9 Mauritian Musicians Who Defined the Sound of the Island

· Kaya Music Island

Mauritius may be small, but its musical talent is immense. From sega legends to seggae pioneers, these are the artists who shaped the sound of the island and carried Mauritian music to the world.

1. Cassiya

One of the most popular sega bands in Mauritian history, Cassiya dominated the 1990s and 2000s with hits that blended traditional sega with modern pop sensibilities. Their catchy melodies and danceable rhythms made sega accessible to a younger generation while maintaining its cultural roots.

2. Ti Frer (Alphonse Ravaton)

Known as the "King of Sega," Ti Frer (1900-1992) is considered the most important figure in the history of traditional sega. He preserved and popularised the art form during a period when it risked being forgotten, performing well into his 80s and recording the definitive versions of classic sega songs.

3. Fanfan

A prolific sega artist known for his energetic performances and socially conscious lyrics. Fanfan helped bridge the gap between traditional and modern sega, introducing electric instruments and contemporary arrangements while keeping the ravanne at the heart of his sound.

4. Zulu

A seggae artist who has carried the genre's torch into the 2000s and beyond. Zulu's music combines the conscious lyrics of seggae with modern production, addressing contemporary social issues in Mauritius through music that moves both the body and the mind.

5. Laura Beg

One of Mauritius' most internationally recognised voices, Laura Beg blends sega with world music, jazz, and pop. Her multilingual performances (Creole, French, English) have taken Mauritian music to stages across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

6. Menwar

A self-taught musician and cultural activist, Menwar has dedicated his career to preserving traditional Mauritian music forms. His raw, acoustic performances on the ravanne connect modern audiences directly to the ancestral roots of sega.

7. Blakkayo

Blakkayo brought sega into the digital age with his fusion of traditional rhythms and modern dancehall, hip-hop, and electronic beats. His high-energy performances and music videos helped sega reach younger audiences across the Indian Ocean region.

8. Eric Triton

A singer-songwriter known for his poetic Creole lyrics and intimate acoustic style. Eric Triton's music explores themes of love, nostalgia, and Mauritian identity with a gentleness that contrasts with sega's typically high-energy approach.

9. Alain Ramanisum

A modern sega superstar whose romantic ballads and upbeat dance tracks have dominated Mauritian radio for over two decades. Alain Ramanisum represents the commercial evolution of sega — polished production with mass appeal, yet still unmistakably rooted in Mauritian tradition.
