Our Story

Musicians performing in Mauritius

Born in Mauritius, Built for the World

Kaya Music Island was founded in 2024 with a clear purpose: to preserve and amplify the rich musical heritage of Mauritius. Our island nation, sitting in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, is home to some of the most unique music genres on Earth — sega, seggae, ravanne, and Creole folk — yet these sounds have rarely reached audiences beyond our shores.

The name "Kaya" reflects the spirit of Mauritian music culture — bold, authentic, and rooted in the island's identity. It represents our commitment to preserving the diverse musical traditions of Mauritius and ensuring they reach audiences around the world.

We created Kaya Music Island to give Mauritian musicians what they have never had before: a dedicated digital platform to share their art, earn a sustainable income, and connect directly with fans. Every subscription goes straight to the creator. Every concert ticket sold through our platform supports a local artist and a local venue.

Today, Kaya Music Island is available as a free app on iOS and Android, with a growing catalogue of exclusive video content from Mauritian creators. We also sell tickets for live concerts across the island — from beachside performances in Flic en Flac to festival stages in Port Louis. Our goal is to make Mauritian music as accessible and celebrated as any genre in the world.

Why "Kaya"?

In Mauritian Creole, "kaya" evokes a feeling of energy, rhythm, and island life. It is a word that captures the spirit of Mauritian music — vibrant, authentic, and deeply connected to the culture of the island. We chose this name because it represents exactly what our platform is about: bringing the authentic sounds of Mauritius to the world.

Mauritius has an extraordinary musical heritage spanning genres like sega, seggae, ravanne, reggae, and Creole folk. Each genre tells a story of the island's multicultural history and the resilience of its people. Kaya Music Island exists to ensure these stories continue to be told, shared, and celebrated.
